Klein Curaçao Kitesurfing Advanced Day Trips from Curaçao
Klein Curaçao is a small, uninhabited island 10 km southeast of Curaçao.
Flat, windy and almost completely barren, it offers one of the most unique advanced kitesurfing experiences in the Caribbean. We organise guided day trips for experienced riders to the protected western side of the island.
What is Klein Curaçao?
Klein Curaçao is essentially a scraped-off rock in the middle of the sea.
Centuries of phosphate mining left the island almost without vegetation. There are no hotels, no bars and no facilities — only a few simple fishermen’s huts, an old lighthouse and two shipwrecks on the windward side.
The real interest for us is the consistent trade wind and the open water on the leeward (western) side.

A Short History
In the 17th and 18th centuries the Dutch West India Company used Klein Curaçao as a quarantine station for sick enslaved Africans arriving by ship. Remains of the old quarantine building can still be found in the northwest, and several graves are still visible in the southern part of the island.A sailor is also buried here.
Between 1871 and 1886 the island was heavily mined for phosphate after British engineer John Godden discovered rich deposits. The mining stripped the land and left the island several metres lower than it once was.
The iconic lighthouse (Prins Hendrik Tower) was first built in the mid-19th century, destroyed by the hurricane of 1877, and rebuilt in its current form in 1913.
It still stands in the centre of the island and is now solar-powered.On the windward side lie the rusting remains of the tanker Maria Bianca Guidesman and a sailing yacht that ran aground on the cliffs.

Nature & Wildlife
Despite its barren appearance, Klein Curaçao is excellent for wildlife.
Hawksbill and green sea turtles are common — both in the water while kiting or snorkeling and as nesting visitors on the beaches. (You will also see many turtles in St. Joris Bay.)
The underwater drop-off is steep and vertical, creating a beautiful drift dive with current. Visibility is often excellent. At night there is virtually no light pollution.
If you ever stay overnight in one of the simple fishermen’s huts (hammock under a palm roof), the starry sky is spectacular. We have spent many nights here, cooking self-caught fish and cockles over a small fire.

Kitesurfing on Klein Curaçao
This is an advanced-only spot. You need solid, confident upwind riding skills. The wind is consistent and the sessions are intense.
We kite exclusively on the leeward (western) side of the island. Because of increased boat traffic, we mostly ride the northern and southern ends of the west coast.
A typical trip is a same-day charter from Curaçao. You can expect around 4 hours of riding. Stay on your board the whole time and you’ll be completely wrecked by the time you get back. We do not give lessons on Klein Curaçao. We only guide and accompany experienced independent riders.
